Update on Repairs and Renovations to Hillsboro's Old Stone School General Interior
Throughout the rest of the building, there is damage from smoke and heat to the plaster walls, hardwood floors, and contents. When the water was sprayed to fight the fire, the combination of the heat and the chemicals in the smoke and soot caused it to adhere to the plaster walls throughout the building, including upstairs, leaving black streak marks that did not come off even after the professional cleaning was completed.
Additionally, soot settled on the contents throughout the building, including in rooms upstairs on the opposite side of the building. What could be salvaged has been cleaned. Other items had to be thrown away and will need to be replaced. The furniture has been inspected by a professional furniture restoration company, and based on information from that company, the HCA is in the process of determining what will be restored or replaced. The vintage school desks that had been used when the Old Stone School functioned as a school will have to be completely renovated.
All of the rooms, from the ceilings to the floors, have been professionally cleaned. However, the smoke and soot adhered to the plaster walls, so that the only way to repair the damage is to prime and repaint the walls and ceilings throughout the building. This process has already begun by Zurschmeide Contracting. The soot also settled on all of the hardwood floors throughout the building, and the combination of the chemicals in that soot and the process of cleaning the floors which stripped off the finish, require that all of the floors be refinished. The first step of sanding all the floors is in progress.
