Old Stone School History, continued

From 1976 to 2006, the HCA leased the Old Stone School from Loudoun County, with the agreement that the County would maintain the outside of the school while the Hillsboro Community Association maintained the inside. Any significant alteration inside required the approval of the County. About 14 years ago the north wall of the west addition buckled and required about $40,000 worth of stonework, paid for by the County. In 2003, the roof blew off the same west addition and was repaired in a timely fashion by the County. The kitchen was remodeled in 1999 with work done mainly by volunteers and materials paid for by the Hillsboro Community Association. In 1997, a handicap ramp leading to the east side entrance was built by the County to fulfill the Disability Act requirement. In December 2006, ownership of the building transferred from Loudoun County to the Town of Hillsboro, with the agreement that the relationship between the HCA and the Town would remain as it had with the County.

In May, 2008, an accidential fire caused significant damage throughout the building. Though we still have finishing touches to make throughout the building, it now looks wonderful thanks to the work of Zurschmeide Contracting, and the help and donations from members of our community.

Additional improvements and renovations continue to be made, and the maintenance is demanding and extremely costly. The heating fuel bills alone can be astronomical (as much as $1,600 in January) since buildings of this vintage are often drafty and lack insulation. The Hillsboro Community Association continues its work to raise the funds to maintain this majestic school, which welcomes residents, visitors, and tourists as they pass through Hillsboro on Route 9 from the east and west.
