Homes on the 2008 Christmas in Hillsboro Homes Tour!

Birch Hollow (View photos)
This Victorian farmhouse was built by the Neers, a family prominent in the Hillsboro area from the early 1800’s. The farm was originally settled by the Redmond family in 1756, and it was later owned by the Osburn and Leslie families. The property’s stone spring house, wash house, and log smoke house are believed to date as early as the Redmond’s tenure, and have been carefully restored. The Neer family obtained the farm in 1829, and used the foundation of an earlier structure to complete the existing house at some point in the late 1800’s. The home’s interior features fine Victorian woodwork and 4 working fireplaces. The unusually large front porch is a wonderful place to enjoy the mountain breezes and views of the Short Hill. The home has been renovated in recent years to provide modern accommodations for a large, lively family, while maintaining the character of its origins. In 2005 a kitchen addition was completed, integrating the smokehouse as a charming guest bedroom for the home and reverting the old kitchen back to its original use as a cozy sitting room. One of the county’s largest barns, dated from the 1890’s, houses the family’s goats and chickens. It is attached to a much older stone farm structure, now used as a guest house and office. The current owners are Carol and Ben Lenhart, who have enjoyed furnishing their home with family pieces that complement the history of the house.
